YES, 911 WORKS IN SWITZERLAND! ⠀
Regardless whether you call from a landline or your mobile phone. ⠀
⠀
911 and 112 are two international emergency numbers. ⠀
⠀
911 can be called in Switzerland, both from landlines and mobile phones, and is forwarded to the next police emergency call centre. ⠀
⠀
112 can be called in Switzerland but where it is forwarded to varies from canton to canton. In most cantons 112 is forwarded to the police (117). ⠀
⠀
⠀
112 can be dialled or used in addition to other national numbers in nearly every country in Europe and also in Turkey and Algeria. There are a few exceptions, so before travelling, check a country’s emergency numbers. ⠀
⠀
You can also dial 112 in Australia, New Zealand and the US (if the mobile phone is equipped with an EU Sim card). ⠀
⠀
⠀
Automatic emergency call from your iPhone are preset to g to 112. ⠀
⠀
⠀
While nearly everyone knows 911 as an emergency number, in Switzerland the awareness of emergency numbers is much lower: only 50% of the population know 144 (ambulance), 65% those of the police 117 and the fire brigade 118. Only 10% of the population knew 112.⠀
