BLS - AED

It can happen to anyone!
You, a relative, a friend, a work colleague ... Every minute counts! If BLS is not started immediately, survival chances decrease by 10% with every minute. In only few cases, a doctor is on site within a few minutes, but everyone can start providing first aid by starting BLS until professional help arrives.
What does BLS stand for?
The acronym BLS stands for "Basic Life Support" and is the term describing the first aid measures laypeople perform to either sustain or revive (resuscitate) a victim suffering from sudden cardiac arrest and/or severe respiratory failure, independent of the cause. This includes heart attack or stroke victims as well as the drowning victim. The BLS certification is the most basic resuscitation certification.
In Switzerland, BLS training programmes include CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and defibrillation (the use of an automated external defibrillator, commonly known as AED).
BLS is sometimes called BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support). Medical professionals are often required a more advanced training called ALS (Advanced Life Support) or ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support). At this time, we are not able to offer ALS/ACLS courses.

WHAT IS DEFIBRILLATION?

According to the definition of the American Heart Association (AHA), an AED or automated external defibrillator (AED) is a computerised medical device which can check a person’s heart rhythm. It can recognise a rhythm that requires a shock. And it can advise the rescuer when a shock is needed.
AEDs are very accurate and easy to use. In a few hours anyone can learn to operate an AED safely.

The AHA suggests placing AEDs in targeted public areas such as office complexes, sports arenas, gated communities, doctor's offices, shopping malls, and many others. As part of this program, it is strongly encouraged that laypeople within the facility are trained in CPR and the correct use of the AED.
